Context
An Orchard Park homeowner had a copper supply-line failure in a basement ceiling area at approximately 11pm Day 0. Water ran for 4 hours before discovery and shutoff, soaking approximately 180 square feet of basement carpet + drywall + insulation. A water-damage restoration contractor (IICRC S500 certified) responded within 6 hours, performed extraction, set up dehumidifiers + air movers, and declared the area dry at Day 5 based on moisture meter readings.

Why 14-day verification
Standard mold-growth timeline for the most-common WNY indoor species (Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium) is 24-48 hours under sustained moisture. Slower-growing species (Stachybotrys, Chaetomium) require 7-14 days. Even after drying is complete, hidden moisture in inaccessible cavities (under flooring, behind drywall, inside insulation batts) can sustain growth that becomes detectable only later. A 14-day post-event verification test captures both fast and slow-growing species at the point when growth would be clearly evident if it had occurred.
§
Methodology
Day 14 site visit. Pre-sampling moisture mapping with FLIR thermal imaging confirmed no remaining moisture differential at the affected area, the unaffected basement perimeter, or the floor system below. Spore-trap air sampling at 4 indoor locations (affected basement area, adjacent basement area, first-floor living space, outdoor baseline). Surface tape-lift sampling at 3 spots on the dried-out drywall + at the carpet edge.
§
Lab results
Air-sample results: Aspergillus/Penicillium at 380 sec/m³ in affected basement vs 320 sec/m³ in adjacent basement vs 420 sec/m³ in outdoor baseline. Cladosporium and other species at typical background levels. No Stachybotrys, no Chaetomium, no elevated species. Surface tape-lifts negative for active mold growth. Lab analysis at EMSL Analytical with chain-of-custody documented.

Report + interpretation
Conclusion: no significant mold growth occurred following the Day-0 water event. The restoration contractor's drying work was effective + timely; the moisture window was successfully closed before species establishment. Report delivered with explicit statement of methodology, lab data, regulatory benchmarks, and conclusion. No remediation recommended.
