Context
A Western NY school district (anonymized at district request) completed a summer renovation of 3 adjacent classrooms in late August. Renovation included new vinyl plank flooring, new cabinetry, fresh interior paint, and replacement window-sill caulking. Classroom occupancy resumed in September at the start of the school year. By mid-October, 4 teachers across the 3 rooms reported persistent headaches, eye irritation, and chemical-odor complaints. The school nurse documented 2 student-symptom complaints in the same rooms. Methodology
Site visit during a Wednesday school day (occupied conditions). Deployment of multi-parameter IAQ monitors in each affected classroom + 1 control classroom + outdoor reference: TSI Q-Trak meter for CO₂, CO, temperature, relative humidity over the school day; HCHO meter for formaldehyde (with periodic confirmation grab samples); Summa canister TO-15 sampling for broad VOC speciation; particulate counter for PM2.5. Field interview with teachers + facilities staff on renovation timeline + ventilation schedule.

Lab + field findings
CO₂: peaked at 1,800-2,400 ppm during occupied periods in affected rooms (ASHRAE 62.1 target is below 1,000 ppm above outdoor). Indicating insufficient ventilation despite facilities' increased flow rates. Formaldehyde: 92-118 ppb in affected rooms vs 28 ppb in control room (WHO guideline is 100 ppb; ATSDR minimum risk level acute is 40 ppb). Total VOC (TVOC) elevated 4-7x control room concentrations. VOC speciation identified the elevated compounds as alpha-pinene, n-hexane, ethylbenzene, methyl methacrylate. Consistent with off-gassing from new flooring adhesive + cabinet finishes + interior paint.

Source attribution
Compound pattern + emission strength + concentration distribution all consistent with new-construction material off-gassing. Renovation completion was 8 weeks pre-test. Within the typical 12-26 week off-gassing window for vinyl flooring adhesives + cabinet finishes. Ventilation rates, while increased, were insufficient to dilute the emission rates at the renovation timeline stage.

Recommendations + outcome
Three-track recommendation: (1) Substantially increase ventilation in the affected classrooms. Running supply fans at maximum capacity + propping doors open between classes for 6 weeks; (2) Daily flush-out cycles after school hours; (3) Re-test at week 14 post-renovation and week 22 post-renovation to track concentration decay. The district implemented all three recommendations.
